Dogo Onsen (Japan's oldest hot spring, 3,000 years), Botchan clock, and Masaoka Shiki — the Shikoku city foreign guides forget. Field notes from a Feb 2025 visit including onsen prices and station walk times.

Matsuyama is where Japan's oldest hot spring meets its most famous novel. Dogo Onsen (3,000 years of continuous use) is the setting of Natsume Soseki's *Botchan* (1906), Japan's most-taught novel. Ninety minutes from Osaka by plane; less than most Tokyoites will travel for a weekend.

💡Last field-checked: February 2025

Prices, station walk times, and onsen access verified in-person Feb 2025. Dogo Onsen Honkan main building is still in partial preservation works (started 2019); Tsubaki-no-Yu is the fully-open alternative — see below.

Dogo Onsen — the 3,000-year-old bath

Dogo Onsen is mentioned in the *Nihon Shoki* (720 AD), making it the oldest recorded hot spring in Japan. The main building (Dogo Onsen Honkan) is a 1894 wooden bathhouse designated Important Cultural Property — but has been in partial restoration since 2019. The fully-open alternative next door is Tsubaki-no-Yu, using the exact same source water.

Tsubaki-no-Yu entrance. Same source water as the Honkan, ¥450 adults, way less queue.
  • Tsubaki-no-Yu (椿の湯) — ¥450 adults (2025), open 6:30 AM–11:00 PM. Alkaline simple hot spring, 46°C source. Modern building, same water as the historic Honkan. This is where locals bathe.
  • Location: 100m from Dogo Onsen Honkan, 4-min walk from Dogo Onsen Station (Iyotetsu tram). Cross the small square with the karakuri clock.
  • Weather note (Feb 2025): I visited at 4:00 PM on a mild 12°C afternoon. The bath was moderately busy but no wait; I was in and out in 45 min. Weekday morning is emptiest — I asked the attendant.
  • No towel? ¥180 rental at entrance. Shampoo/soap provided (Pola). Bring your own if you want fancy.
  • Tattoos allowed at Tsubaki-no-Yu (rare for public bath) — one of the reasons foreigners are welcome.

Honkan restoration status

Dogo Onsen Honkan (the 1894 building shown on every guide) is undergoing partial restoration through late 2026 — some floors closed, scaffolding on parts of the exterior. The Kami-no-Yu bath is still operating (¥700 adults). If you want the historic building experiencePR, go — but be aware it doesn't look like the postcards right now. Tsubaki-no-Yu next door has zero restoration and the same source water.

Botchan Karakuri Clock outside Dogo Onsen Station. Free ashiyu (foot bath) at the base — locals use it while waiting for trams.
  • Botchan Karakuri Clock (坊っちゃんカラクリ時計) — mechanical clock built for Dogo Onsen's 100th anniversary. Character figures pop out every hour 8:00–22:00 (every 30 min in peak season).
  • Free ashiyu (foot bath) at the base of the clock — sit on the stone benches and dip your feet. Bring a small towel.
  • Location: Directly outside Dogo Onsen Station (Iyotetsu tram terminus).

Masaoka Shiki — the poet who reinvented haiku (and named baseball)

Bronze statue of Masaoka Shiki in baseball uniform holding a bat, with haiku plaque reading 生垣の外は枯野や球遊び
Masaoka Shiki (1867–1902) statue in central Matsuyama. Haiku on the plaque: *Beyond the hedge, a withered field — and boys playing ball* (Winter 1899).

Masaoka Shiki was born in Matsuyama in 1867, invented the modern *haiku* form, and — no exaggeration — is the reason Japanese baseball terminology exists. He translated 'baseball' as 野球 (yakyu), 'batter' as 打者 (dasha), 'runner' as 走者 (sosha). These are all his coinages, still in use today. The statue shows him as a baseball player because he was an obsessive player before tuberculosis ended his short life at 34.

  • Shiki Memorial Museum (子規記念博物館) — 500m from Dogo Onsen. ¥400 adults, closed Tuesdays. English pamphlet available.
  • Statue location: In front of Iyotetsu Dogo Onsen Station square (visible in my photo above).
  • Read before you visit: *Botchan* (Natsume Soseki, 1906, 200 pages) is set in Matsuyama. Free English translation online. Soseki taught here for a year and hated it — the novel is his revenge.
