日本换钱完整指南。7-11 ATM 是王者、Charles Schwab/Wise 卡、无小费文化、需准备现金量。

Japan is STILL 50% cash-based even in 2026 — temples, small restaurants, taxis, market stalls. But how to actually get yen without getting ripped off? Here's the smart strategy.

TL;DR winners

  • Best debit card: Charles Schwab Investor Checking (0% fees + refunds ATM fees)
  • Best alternative: Wise / Revolut (near-perfect exchange rate)
  • Best ATM in Japan: 7-Eleven (Seven Bank) — English, no fee, accepts all foreign cards
  • Worst option: Airport currency booths (5-7% below market)
  • Cash to carry daily: ¥10,000-20,000 per person for cash-only shops
  • Total cash for 2 weeks: ¥50,000-100,000 (depending on cash-heavy activities)

7-Eleven ATM strategy (do this)

  • Every 7-Eleven has an ATM — 20,000+ locations nationwide
  • Available 24/7 (some maintenance windows 2-4 AM)
  • English menu: choose your language on screen
  • Withdraw ¥30,000-50,000 per transaction to minimize fees
  • Fees: your bank's international ATM fee (often $3-5) + ATM operator fee (¥110-220)
  • Charles Schwab refunds ALL international ATM fees
  • Alternative: Family Mart + Lawson also have ATMs, usually work with foreign cards

IC card top-ups (Suica/Pasmo)

  • Where to top up: any train station kiosk, all conbini
  • Top up amount: ¥1,000-10,000 at a time
  • Cash only for top-ups (mostly)
  • Mobile Suica: link to Apple Pay / Google Pay for touchless top-ups
  • Refund unused balance: at any JR East ticketPR office when leaving Japan

Tipping rules (SIMPLE: don't)

Japan has NO tipping culture. In restaurants, taxis, hotels — do NOT tip. It's actually considered rude. Staff will chase you down the street to return your 'forgotten' money. The only exception: high-end ryokan may include an optional gratuity in the bill (rare). If you want to show appreciation, learn to say 'gochisosama deshita' (thanks for the meal).

Cash-only places to expect

  • Small ramen shops (esp. outside TokyoPR)
  • Temples + shrines (donations, souvenirs)
  • Local izakaya (bar/pub)
  • Vending machines (cash or IC card)
  • Small taxis (though most take IC card now)
  • Market stalls (Tsukiji, Ameyoko, Kuromon)
  • Ryokan check-in (many still cash-only)
  • Onsen day-use (cash for locker + towel rental)

Emergency: what if you run out?

  • Walk to nearest 7-Eleven — never more than 500m in cities
  • Ask hotel front desk — they'll direct you to nearest ATM
  • In rural areas: post offices (Yucho ATM), banks (limited hours)
  • Absolute emergency: some hotels can cash-advance on credit cards (with fees)
