Hiraizumi Chusonji Temple 2027: World Heritage Golden Hall & Iwate Access
2026-10-22 · 10分钟阅读

The complete 2027 visitor guide to Chusonji in Hiraizumi, Iwate: the Konjiki-do Golden Hall, shinkansen access from Tokyo, and the Pure Land Buddhism origin story.
In the 12th century a northern Japanese dynasty built a Pure Land Buddhist utopia in the forests of Iwate. Three generations later it collapsed. What survives is Chusonji's Konjiki-do: a hall covered head-to-toe in gold leaf, entombed within a protective shell, holding the mummified lord who commissioned it. Among Japan's quietest, strangest, most moving sites.

The Konjiki-do Golden Hall
Konjiki-do (literally 'golden-colored hall') was built in 1124 by the Northern Fujiwara clan as a tomb hall. The entire interior is leafed in gold, with mother-of-pearl inlay, lacquered pillars, and three Amida Buddha statues at the center. Beneath the altar lie the mummified remains of three generations of Fujiwara lords. The hall is now enclosed within a protective concrete reliquary, visible through a glass wall. Photography inside the shell is forbidden; most visitors spend 15 minutes just standing in silence. The surrounding temple complex includes 17 subsidiary halls and a Treasure Hall with 3,000 artifacts — scrolls, mandalas, Buddhist sculpture — all designated National Treasures.
Pure Land (Jodo) Buddhism was the dominant popular Buddhism in 12th-century Japan: chant Amida Buddha's name sincerely and after death you will be reborn in the Pure Land, a paradise free of suffering. The Northern Fujiwara attempted to build that Pure Land on earth at Hiraizumi — golden halls, lotus-filled gardens, a city that mimicked paradise architecturally. Chusonji's Konjiki-do is its surviving centerpiece.
