Tottori Prefecture 2027: Sand Dunes, Daisen + Kitaro Road
💡TL;DR⏱ 4 min read

Tottori is Japan's least populous prefecture — famed for a 16-km coastal sand desert, GeGeGe no Kitaro's hometown street, and the sacred cone of Mt. Daisen.

Tottori is where Japan keeps its only sand desert, its last stegosaurus-shaped mountain and a street officially haunted by 177 bronze yokai. It is also Japan's least populated prefecture, which means your sunrise over the dunes is sometimes just you and a tide of camels.

History + what makes Tottori special

Tottori's identity rests on three unlikely assets. The Tottori Sand Dunes (鳥取砂丘), formed by the Chugoku Mountains washing sediment into the Sea of Japan over 100,000 years, are the largest in Japan — 16 km of coast where tourists ride camels and photograph a Sahara-style landscape just 10 min from a shinkansen-connected airport. Mt. Daisen (大山), a 1,729 m stratovolcano, is the San-in's spiritual peak and skiers' winter base. And Sakaiminato — Tottori's westernmost port — produced manga master Mizuki Shigeru, creator of GeGeGe no Kitaro, whose 177 bronze yokai statues line the 800 m road from the station.

  • ●Tottori Sand Dunes — 16 km × 2 km of ocean-side sand; camel rides, sandboarding, 50-m 'bowl' crater.
  • ●Mt. Daisen — Western Japan's 2nd-highest peak outside the Alps; easy 4-hr summit hike or winter skiing.
  • ●Mizuki Shigeru Road (Sakaiminato) — 800-m haunted-themed street, GeGeGe no Kitaro Museum.
  • ●Uradome Coast — Rias-type coastline with sea caves; glass-bottom boat tours Apr-Oct.
  • ●Hinomisaki Lighthouse area — Not to confuse with Shimane's; Tottori's northern tip has similar coastal cliffs.

What to eat here

Tottori is Japan's #1 producer of nijuseiki (20th-century) pears, matsuba crab, and Daisen beef. The Sea of Japan supplies winter crab (Nov-Mar is peak season), and the Chugoku highlands produce milky Daisen craft dairy. Tottori has more beef sashimi shops per capita than any other prefecture.

  • ●Matsuba crab (松葉がに) — ¥10,000-28,000 — Male snow crab, Nov 6 to Mar 20 season; try at Kani-ya restaurant in Tottori Station.
  • ●Daisen beef (大山牛) — ¥3,500-6,000 — Marbled A5 beef; Yakiniku Daisen in Yonago is the local institution.
  • ●Tottori beef bowl (牛骨ラーメン) — ¥800-1,100 — Beef-bone broth ramen, Tottori prefecture original.
  • ●Nijuseiki pear sweets — ¥500-800 — Nashi pear parfaits + pies, sold Jul-Oct peak season.
