Tokaido Ancient Highway Walk 2027: 53 Stations Complete Guide
💡TL;DR⏱ 4 min read

The Tokaido was Japan's main Tokyo-Kyoto highway for 300 years. Most of it is modern road, but 7 preserved stretches - plus Hakone's old stone pavement - still let you walk Hiroshige's woodblock prints in 2027.

The Tokaido was the Tokugawa shogunate's main highway - 490 km from Edo (Tokyo) to Kyoto, 53 post stations, 300 years of samurai, pilgrims, and daimyo processions. Hiroshige painted all 53 stations in 1833. Most of it is now Route 1 asphalt, but 7 preserved stretches still let you walk the Edo road.

History + what makes Tokaido special

Tokugawa Ieyasu formalized the Tokaido as Japan's primary highway in 1601, pre-staging 53 post-town station lodges where samurai lords, pilgrims, and merchants rested on the Edo-Kyoto run. The road was elaborately regulated: daimyo processions could number 1,000+ retainers, and station towns were legally required to provide horses + porters. Hiroshige's '53 Stations of the Tokaido' (1833-34 woodblock print series) is one of the most famous Japanese art works globally and captured the exact village scenes along the road. After the Meiji Restoration (1868), railroads replaced the Tokaido and most of the stone pavement was buried under Route 1. Today seven stretches - Hakone (Japan's longest preserved Edo road at 8 km), Satta Pass, Mishima-Numazu, Shizuoka-Fujieda, Okazaki, Seki-shuku, and Tsuchiyama - preserve the original cedar-lined cobblestone road, with Hiroshige's views still recognizable.
