Ako is Hyogo's salt capital - the castle town whose 450-year tidal-flat salt tradition funded the samurai domain that produced the 47 Ronin. Today you can taste the salt where it's still made, climb the castle those ronin plotted from, and watch the Seto Inland Sea sun hit the same flats.

History + what makes Ako salt special
Ako sits on the Seto Inland Sea coast of western Hyogo. In 1626, Ako samurai Minoru Yamada invented the Irihama (入浜) salt-production method - rake-flat beach gardens flooded with high-tide seawater, drained to a brine, then evaporated by iron pot. The technique spread across western Japan and powered 300 years of salt supply to Osaka merchants. Ako Castle was the domain where Chushingura (the 47 Ronin story) started in 1701, when Lord Asano drew his sword at Edo Castle after being insulted by Lord Kira and was ordered to commit seppuku. His 47 retainers plotted revenge from Ako's Oishi Shrine for 2 years before storming Kira's Edo mansion. The Dec 14 anniversary parade is the national Chushingura memorial.
