Setsubun day, early February (2027 schedule not yet announced)

Kushida Shrine in Hakata, Fukuoka, holds its Grand Setsubun Festival on Setsubun day in February. Before Setsubun, giant Otafuku masks, each standing about 5 meters tall, are installed at the main two-storied gate, the north gate and the south gate, and visitors walk through their open mouths, which is believed to bring business prosperity and household safety. On Setsubun day, famous personalities take part in a bean-throwing ritual on a special stage.

Dazaifu Tenmangu, in Dazaifu about 35 minutes by Nishitetsu train from Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station, holds its Baikasai plum blossom festival on February 25, the anniversary of Sugawara no Michizane's death, and the priests wear plum blossoms in their caps. The shrine grounds have 6,000 plum trees of about 200 varieties.
