Why Takeo and Ureshino
The Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen opened in 2022 and quietly made two of Kyushu's loveliest onsen towns a day-trip from Hakata. Takeo's station has a vermilion torii gate right by the ticket gates and a bathhouse ten minutes' walk away that has been running since the Nara period. Ureshino is bigger, with ryokan rooms perched over a short river, a surprisingly good ceramics scene, and the local hot-spring tofu โ pieces of white tofu simmered until they almost melt in the alkaline bath water.
