Air Terjun Oshinkoshin Shiretoko 2027: Pit Stop 5 Menit yang Berharga
💡TL;DR⏱ 3 min read

Air Terjun Oshinkoshin terbelah jadi dua kaskade turun tebing basalt 50m di jalan masuk Shiretoko. Lima menit dari mobil, gratis, salah satu air terjun paling banyak difoto di Hokkaido. Berikut panduan singkatnya.

Oshinkoshin Falls (オシンコシンの滝) splits halfway down into two parallel white cascades — the reason locals also call it Futami-no-taki ("Twin View Falls"). It is one of Hokkaido's few "Top 100 Waterfalls of Japan" and the easiest Shiretoko stop that still earns a photo. Five minutes from your car, free, and open 24/7 — this is the warm-up to the Shiretoko peninsula drive, not the main course.

⚡⏰ Peak-season rooms go first

⚡Winter closure risk + wet platform year-round

Route 334 is open year-round but can briefly close after heavy snow. The viewing platform gets soaked by spray — in winter it ices over and becomes genuinely dangerous. Non-slip boots are essential November through April.

Why it's worth 15 minutes

Shiretoko has bigger attractions (bear cruise, Five Lakes, Rausu orcas) and this is NOT one of them. But it sits directly on the road between Shari and Utoro, costs nothing, and gives a free "Shiretoko has arrived" photo stop. The twin-cascade split halfway down is unusual for Japanese waterfalls — most are single-drop — and the mist in summer is a welcome cooldown after the drive.

Getting there

  • ●By car (easiest) — From Utoro, drive 15 min west on Route 334 (direction Shari). The falls are signposted. Free parking right at the trailhead.
  • ●From Memanbetsu Airport — 2 hr drive east on Route 39 → Route 334. Falls are the last roadside stop before Utoro.
  • ●By bus (seasonal) — Shari Bus runs the "Shiretoko sightseeing bus" June–October that stops at Oshinkoshin on request. Check with Shari Bus Terminal.
  • ●Taxi from Utoro — ¥2,500 one-way, 15 min. Only worth it if you don't have a car for other Shiretoko stops.

Best season

  • ●May – June — Peak snowmelt flow; the waterfall is at its widest and most dramatic. Mist is cold.
  • ●July – August — Still strong flow, mist is cooling, surrounded by lush summer green.
  • ●September – October — Autumn colours start late September; the surrounding cliffs turn red/gold.
  • ●November – April — Partial freeze from late December to March. The frozen waterfall is spectacular but access path is icy — microspikes recommended.

FAQ

  • ●Can I walk behind the waterfall? No — the viewing platform is in front. There is no path behind.
  • ●Is the sign in English? Yes — the main sign has Japanese + English. Audio guide not available (not needed, 15-min stop).
  • ●Can I bring a drone? Technically not banned at Oshinkoshin itself, but Shiretoko National Park broadly discourages drones for wildlife reasons. Avoid.
  • ●Wheelchair access? The lower platform is accessible by paved path. The upper viewing platform requires climbing ~50 stone steps.
  • ●Any food/toilets? No shop on site. Small toilet building year-round. Nearest food: Utoro (15 min drive east).
  • ●Can I visit at night? Technically open, but no lighting. Bear-active season (May–Oct) makes night visits unsafe.
  • ●How does it compare to Fukuroda Falls (Ibaraki)? Fukuroda is bigger and has 4-tier structure. Oshinkoshin is smaller but trade-off is zero crowds and free parking.
