Japan's oldest citywide winter illumination - running since 1981 - returns to Odori Park next month. Expect fresh snow on the ground for opening weekend.
Sapporo White Illumination - the oldest continuously running citywide illumination in Japan, launched in 1981 - is expected to open Saturday, November 21, 2026 at the Odori Park venue. The committee's full 2026 schedule has not yet been posted at the time of writing, but the Odori site has opened Nov 21 for three consecutive years and the hotel package pages already use that date.

The Odori Nishi 2-chome site is the one everyone photographs - an 11-meter illuminated tree surrounded by light sculptures, with the Sapporo TV Tower lit red at the east end of the park as a backdrop.
What is new in 2026
The 2026 edition is expected to continue the shift the organizers made in 2024 toward lower-energy LEDs - which, counter-intuitively, means a slightly warmer tone than the previous cool-white 'ice' look. Snow is almost always on the ground by opening weekend; the first measurable snowfall in Sapporo this season was already recorded in late October.

The Munich Christmas Market in Sapporo normally returns to Odori Nishi 2 at the same time (late Nov - Dec 25). Sapporo TV Tower observation deck has one of the cleanest overhead shots of the illuminated axis - go up before 19:00 to beat the queue.
