Why Obihiro and Tokachi

Most travellers see Sapporo, Hakodate and maybe Furano. Obihiro is on the other side of Hokkaido and gets overlooked — but it is the easiest Japanese city to spend a day walking from one world-class sweets shop to the next. The Tokachi plain is a huge agricultural bowl: rolling patchwork fields, dairy farms, big draft-horse races in winter. Allow a half-day for the city, a half-day for one farm or hot-spring stop, and build a full day for Naitai Terrace or Rikubetsu if you have a rental car.
