Ninety per cent jungle, home to the endangered Iriomote wildcat, and only reachable by boat from Ishigaki. A UNESCO site since 2021 and still almost tourist-free compared to the main Okinawa island.
Iriomote is 90% jungle, had 2,400 residents at the last census, and is one of only two places on Earth where you might (but probably won't) see an Iriomote wildcat.

Why Iriomote
If you want Japan to look nothing like Japan, come here. Iriomote has the country's largest mangrove ecosystem, a subtropical rainforest you can only enter by kayak, and the Pinaisara Falls โ a 55 m drop above a jungle plateau. The island was added to UNESCO's World Natural Heritage list in 2021 and still receives a fraction of the visitors who stay on Ishigaki. Base yourself on-island for 2-3 nights to really use the daylight; day trips from Ishigaki cover the surface only.
