Shimane Prefecture 2027: Izumo, Matsue + Iwami Ginzan Guide
2026-10-25 · 11 Min. Lesezeit

Shimane is where Japan's oldest shrine, a UNESCO silver mine, and a sea of islands nobody has heard of share one quiet prefecture â the San-in coast at its slowest.
Shimane is where the Shinto gods are said to gather every October â and the rest of the year, where domestic Japanese tourists go when they want somewhere Tokyo has forgotten exists. Four nights here moves slower than four weeks in Kyoto, and that is the whole point.

History + what makes Shimane special
Shimane sits on the Sea of Japan coast facing Korea, cut off from the Pacific-side Shinkansen spine. That isolation preserved three cultural treasures: Izumo Taisha (ćșéČć€§ç€Ÿ), probably Japan's oldest shrine with records to the 8th century; Matsue Castle (æŸæ±ć), one of only twelve surviving original wooden keeps; and the Iwami Ginzan silver mine, which exported a third of the world's silver supply in the 1600s before UNESCO listed it in 2007. Modern Shimane has fewer than 700,000 residents â only Tottori has fewer â and locals openly joke their main competition for Japan's least-visited prefecture is the next door neighbour.
- âKamiarizuki (ç„ćšæ) â October is 'the month when gods are present' in Shimane (and 'the month without gods' in the rest of Japan); Izumo Taisha hosts the entire pantheon.
- âOriginal wooden keeps â Matsue is one of only five of the twelve originals designated National Treasure.
- âIwami Ginzan â Rare UNESCO industrial-heritage listing; the historic mine tunnel is walkable with a flashlight.
- âOki Islands â Four inhabited volcanic islands, UNESCO Global Geopark, reached only by ferry from Shichirui.
- âLafcadio Hearn connection â Victorian-era Western writer who settled in Matsue; his house is a museum.

What to eat here
Shimane cuisine centres on Lake Shinji's seven wonders â a culinary catch of eel, whitebait, Suzuki sea bass, carp, prawns, smelt and shijimi clams â plus Izumo soba, served cold in three stacked rounds. The San-in coast adds matsuba crab in winter and fresh Oki Islands sashimi year round.
- âIzumo soba (ćșéČăă°) â „900-1,400 â Rough-ground buckwheat served cold in three lacquer tiers; eat at Kaneya in central Matsue.
- âShijimi clam miso soup â „400-600 â Lake Shinji's signature; every Matsue breakfast ryokan serves it.
- âYamato Shijimi set â „2,000 â Clams five ways; try Honke Kaneyasu by the castle.
- âMatsuba crab (æŸèăă«) â „8,000-25,000 â Nov-Mar only; the San-in winter luxury item.
