History + what makes Kiso Valley special

The Kiso Valley (æœšæ›œè·Ż) is the mountainous 60-km section of the Nakasendo highway that most defined the samurai-era walking experience. Protected by the Kiso-wo (æœšæ›œć°Ÿ) tax-exempt forest status (Tokugawa-era protection of hinoki cypress), the valley preserved its forested character and 11 of the Nakasendo's 69 post stations. The best-preserved - Narai, Yabuhara, Tsumago, Magome - still showcase original Edo architecture, grid layouts, and water troughs. Shimazaki Toson, the Meiji-era novelist born in Magome, chronicled the valley's post-highway decline in his 'Yoake Mae' novel (1929-35). Local wood-crafted products - Kiso lacquer, geta sandals, magewappa (bent-wood lunchboxes) - remain working trade goods. The Nakasendo was formally decommissioned in 1876 when rail routes bypassed the valley; the preserved post towns are a conservation-driven living museum.
