Japan's Three Great Waterfalls: Kegon, Nachi, Fukuroda
2026-10-20 · 3 Min. Lesezeit

Three dramatically different waterfalls, each the signature landscape of its region â and each reachable as a day trip or short overnight from Tokyo.
Water in Japan is rarely wild â it is composed, framed by viewing platforms and shrine gates centuries old. The three great waterfalls are the exception that proves the rule.

Nihon Sandai Meibaku
The grouping of Nihon Sandai Meibaku â Japan's three most famous waterfalls â brings together Kegon in Tochigi, Nachi in Wakayama, and Fukuroda in Ibaraki. Each is strikingly different in form: a single sheer plunge, a sacred cliff spring, and a wide tiered cascade. Visitors who manage to see all three gain a surprisingly complete picture of how Japanese landscape, geology, and religion fit together around moving water.
All three fall within a half-day's travel of Tokyo, making the trio a realistic three-trip project across a single year. Each shows its most dramatic face in a different season, so there is no 'best' time to see all three â only a best time to see each.
1. Kegon Falls (Nikko, Tochigi) â the sheer plunge
Kegon Falls drops 97 meters in a single column from the outflow of Lake Chuzenji on the Nikko highlands. It is the most visited of the three, thanks to its location inside Nikko National Park and its proximity to the UNESCO-listed Toshogu shrine complex. A paid elevator carries visitors down to a dedicated viewing platform at the base of the falls, where the full column is visible in a single frame.
- âHeight â about 97 meters (single drop)

- âBest season â mid- to late-October for autumn colors; mid-winter for partial ice formation on the surrounding cliff springs
2. Nachi Falls (Wakayama) â the sacred cliff

Nachi Falls, at 133 meters, is the tallest of the three and considered sacred in the Shinto tradition. The waterfall itself is the object of worship at the adjacent Hiryu Shrine, part of the Kumano Sanzan pilgrimage network, and the whole area is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list as part of the Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range. The classic view pairs the waterfall with the vermilion three-storied pagoda of Seiganto-ji temple.
- âHeight â about 133 meters (single drop; tallest of the three)
- âAccess from [Tokyo](https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?ss=Tokyo&aid=8095781&label=auto-tokyo-autolink&nflt=review_score%3D80&order=popularity) â Shinkansen to Nagoya, limited express Nanki to Kii-Katsuura (~4 hr total), then local bus to Nachi-no-Taki-mae
- âBest season â any time of year; mist is heaviest after summer rains, autumn pairs the falls with crimson maples around Seiganto-ji
3. Fukuroda Falls (Ibaraki) â the four-tier cascade
Fukuroda Falls spreads 73 meters high and 120 meters wide across four distinct terraces, which gives it its local nickname Yodo no Taki â 'four-times falls' â from the traditional belief that it must be seen in all four seasons to be fully appreciated. In winter, parts of the cascade freeze into pale blue columns, drawing climbers and photographers. A pedestrian tunnel leads to two viewing platforms built into the cliff face opposite the falls.
- âHeight â about 73 meters high, 120 meters wide, in four stepped tiers
- âAccess from [Tokyo](https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?ss=Tokyo&aid=8095781&label=auto-tokyo-autolink&nflt=review_score%3D80&order=popularity) â limited express Hitachi to Mito, change to the JR Suigun Line to Fukuroda (~3 hr total)
- âBest season â mid-November for peak autumn colors, mid-January through February for the famous frozen falls (hyobaku)
Comparing the three
| Waterfall | Height | Form | Travel time from Tokyo |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kegon | 97 m | Single plunge | ~3 hours |
| Nachi | 133 m | Single sacred plunge | ~4 hours |
| Fukuroda | 73 m (Ă120 m wide) | Four tiers | ~3 hours |
đŻPair each falls with a theme trip
Kegon fits naturally into a Nikko shrines-and-foliage itinerary, Nachi into a Kumano Kodo pilgrimage walk, and Fukuroda into an Ibaraki trip around Kairakuen's plum season or the autumn ice-season weekends.
