Kiryu Silk Town Gunma 2027: Weaving + Textile Heritage Guide
2026-10-25 · 9 Min. Lesezeit

Kiryu is Japan's silk capital - 1,300 years of weaving, saw-tooth-roof textile factories, and a Gunma town where kimono-worn silk still rolls off hand looms twice as old as San Francisco.
Kiryu produced 70% of Japan's silk at its peak - 'the Nishijin of the East' - and today the 1,300-year weaving tradition survives in Gunma's saw-tooth-roof factories. Walk the preserved main street in an afternoon and you've seen Japan's industrial-revolution silk heartland.

History + what makes Kiryu silk special
Kiryu silk goes back to 713 CE when the Ashikaga + Kiryu domains began paying taxes in silk cloth. The town's peak came during the Meiji industrialization (1870s-1920s) when Kiryu wove 70% of Japan's silk - 'the Nishijin of the East'. The Jacquard loom imported from France in 1877 transformed hand-weaving into mechanical production, powering the saw-tooth-roof factories (nokogiri yane) you still see throughout Kiryu City. Yagibori, the local Jacquard weaving tradition, specializes in complex pre-dyed yarn patterns impossible to achieve by hand. Today only 30-40 full-time weavers remain, down from 10,000+ in 1920. Tomioka Silk Mill, 90 min west in Gunma, is UNESCO-listed (2014) as Japan's first mechanized silk-reeling factory.

What to eat here
Kiryu's local specialty is Himokawa udon - absurdly wide (5-10 cm) flat noodles. Gunma Prefecture is Japan's #1 konjac producer and the Oze region supplies konnyaku dishes to Kiryu restaurants. Katsudon with Gunma pork and Kiryu's silkworm-pupa snack (sold at souvenir shops) are the eccentric options.
- âHimokawa udon (ăČăăăăă©ă) - Y900-1,400 - Flat 5-10 cm wide noodles; Fujidaya is the Kiryu original.
- âKonnyaku sashimi (ăăă«ăăćșèș«) - Y700 - Jelly-like konjac strips with yuzu-pepper; Gunma specialty.
- âYakitori Kiryu-style - Y200-400/stick - Grilled with miso glaze; main Nakamachi arcade.
- âSilkworm pupa (ăăȘă) snack - Y300 - Historical silk-production byproduct; a brave souvenir pick.
