Seki Samurai Swordsmith Gifu 2027: 700-Year Craft + Museum Guide
2026-10-25 · 9 Min. Lesezeit

Seki is Japan's samurai sword capital - 700 years of swordsmith lineage, 25% of modern sword output, and the town where tourist cutlery shops still sell „80 scissors next to „800,000 katana.
Seki forged the swords that won every major samurai battle from the 1300s to Sekigahara. Today the same town makes 50% of Japan's kitchen knives and 100% of Japan's modern tamahagane katana - and you can walk the 700-year swordsmith lineage in a 3-hour afternoon.

History + what makes Seki swords special
Seki became Japan's swordsmith heartland because of three local resources: iron sand from the Nagara River, hard oak charcoal from the surrounding hills, and clean water for quenching. In the 1330s, swordsmith Kaneuji moved from Mino to Seki and founded the Seki school of katana-making. By the 1500s, Seki smiths were producing 10,000+ katana a year for samurai lords, including the swords used at Sekigahara (1600) and Osaka Castle (1615). After the Meiji Restoration banned swords for civilians (1876), smiths pivoted to kitchen knives, scissors, and razors. Today Seki has 150+ active cutlery makers and ~30 active licensed smiths producing Living National Treasure-level katana at „500,000-5,000,000 each. The town's October festival is Japan's largest cutlery fair, drawing 100,000 visitors.
