History + what makes Iga + Koka special
Iga and Koka are Japan's two rival schools of ninjutsu (ninja techniques). Separated by 30 km of mountain, they developed in the Sengoku period (1467-1600) as the shogunate's primary intelligence networks. Iga-ryu operated under 50+ noble families and was legendary for ambush tactics and poison-tipped shuriken. Koka-ryu served the Rokkaku clan and specialized in medicine, concealment, and double-agent operations. The two schools famously fought each other for the Oda Nobunaga contract in 1581 - the Oda invasion of Iga killed 90% of Iga's ninja families, and Koka assumed de facto dominance of the surviving tradition. After Tokugawa unified Japan (1603), both schools were absorbed as shogunate spy networks and died out with the Meiji Restoration (1868). The modern tourist attractions preserve ninja houses, shuriken training dojos, and a few lineage families still teaching ninjutsu.
