History: why Gion Matsuri exists
In 869 AD, a deadly plague swept Kyoto (then Heian-kyo). Emperor Seiwa ordered prayer at Yasaka Shrine, and 66 hoko (long halberd spears, one for each province of Japan) were erected to placate the plague gods. When the plague ended, an annual purification ritual began — and 1,150 years later, it's STILL happening, virtually unchanged. The yamaboko floats represent those original spears. Every year you watch, you're seeing one of the longest-running rituals in human history.

The two parades explained
Saki Matsuri (July 17) — the famous one
- ●23 yamaboko floats — the iconic 12-ton Naginata-boko leads (always)
- ●Route: Shijo Karasuma → Kawaramachi → Oike → Shinmachi (3-hour parade)
- ●Crowds: 300,000+ along the route
- ●Best viewing: corners where floats turn (Tsuji-mawashi) — visually spectacular as 12-ton floats pivot on bamboo and water
- ●Reserved seats: ¥4,800–10,000, sold by Kyoto City from June
- ●Pro tip: Yoiyama (July 16 evening) BEFORE is far more atmospheric than the parade itself
Ato Matsuri (July 24) — the connoisseur's choice
- ●10 floats including the unique 'Ofune-boko' (boat float) that returned in 2014 after 150-year absence
- ●Route: REVERSE direction of Saki Matsuri
- ●Crowds: half as dense as Saki — perfect for photographers and culture buffs
- ●Same reserved seat system
- ●Recommended for repeat visitors or serious culture travelers
Yoiyama: the 3 nights before each parade

Honest opinion: Yoiyama is the BETTER experience than the parade itself. The three evenings before each parade, the streets close to cars. Each yamaboko float is lit by hundreds of lanterns. Old machiya houses open their family treasures to passersby (Byobu Matsuri). Food stalls line every street. Local families wear yukata. THIS is what 1,000 years of Kyoto tradition feels like.
- ●Saki Yoiyama: July 14 (Yoi-yoi-yoiyama), July 15 (Yoi-yoiyama), July 16 (Yoiyama)
- ●Ato Yoiyama: July 21–23
- ●Streets closed to traffic: 6 PM onwards
- ●Peak crowds: 8–10 PM
- ●Pro tip: arrive at 5 PM, walk WHILE setup is happening — most magical hour
- ●Best food stalls: takoyaki, yakisoba, kakigori (shaved ice), Kyoto-style sake
Where to stay (book IMMEDIATELY)
Kyoto sells out for Gion Matsuri faster than for sakura. Book by January 2026 for July dates. Best areas:
- ●Karasuma / Shijo — Floats are built ON THESE STREETS. You walk out and see floats from your hotel. Most coveted, premium pricing.
- ●Kawaramachi / Pontocho — Walking distance to parades, food + nightlife, mid-priced ryokan and business hotels.
- ●Gion / Higashiyama — Yasaka Shrine area (where mikoshi originate). Atmospheric, walkable to all events.
- ●Kyoto Station — Save on price, take subway to events (5 min ride). Best if booking late.
- ●AVOID: Arashiyama (too far), Fushimi (too south) — adds 45 min to events daily
