History + what makes Aso special

Mt. Aso's main caldera formed in four massive eruptions between 300,000 and 90,000 years ago - the final one deposited ash across Japan + the East China Sea. The modern 'Aso Gogaku' (five peaks) emerged inside the pre-existing caldera and include Nakadake (the only still-active crater, 1,506 m), Takadake (highest at 1,592 m), Nekodake, Kijimadake, and Eboshidake. Approximately 50,000 people live inside the caldera basin, farming the volcanic soil that is Japan's richest. Noyaki (é‡Žç„Œă), the ancient agricultural practice of burning the caldera grasslands every March, keeps the plateau from reverting to forest and preserves pastoral meadows. The caldera was designated Japan's first UNESCO Global Geopark (2014) and still produces milk, grass-fed beef, and 10% of Kumamoto's rice.

  • ●Kusasenri grasslands - 785,000 mÂČ plateau at 1,100 m; horseback riding + grazing cattle.
  • ●Aso Hifuri + Noyaki (mid-March) - Torch festival + grass burn; 1,000-year agricultural tradition.
